Just a few years ago, I’d never have been able to say those words. I’d be like McSorley, unable to grasp the gravity of the moment, thinking all was well and that I had everything under control, even as I was losing it.
Now I know when to throw up the lifeline.
I’ve sold copies of Rising, and I’ve gotten great reviews. I’m not complaining. But I do generate some serious eyebrow-arch when I see headlines like:

The truth is, back then, I’d given up on writing fiction. It wasn’t that I didn’t have ideas… it wasn’t that I lacked the time (well, any more than I do now)…
Back then, I felt storm-beaten and time-worn. At that point in my life, I was exhausted on every level. I’d completely lost touch with myself.
